Schneider Named One of Top 5 Best Companies For Veterans
GREEN BAY, WI… Since 1935, Schneider has recognized the value of employing veterans. Company founder and longtime National Guardsman, Al Schneider, built the foundation of what has grown to become one of North America’s largest truckload carriers by hiring fellow guard members. Over 80 years later, the company remains true to its roots as Schneider’s military-friendly hiring practices have earned it a spot on Monster and Military.com’s 2016 Best Companies for Veterans list, where it ranked No. 5 on the list.
Employment website Monster partnered with http://Military.com/ to assemble the second annual list of veteran-friendly employers. The two-part process began with a panel of veteran hiring experts each nominating 10 companies; next, the companies’ hiring data was analyzed to determine which had the most veteran-friendly hiring practices. Monster published the top 10 companies on its website in November. Schneider was recognized for its high percentage of veteran employees and the programs it offers to support them.
Schneider has a rich history of hiring veterans, and 28 percent of Schneider’s current workforce is comprised of people with military backgrounds.
To help veterans transition into the civilian workforce, Schneider offers a year-long apprenticeship program, during which veterans are eligible to earn a monthly educational benefit check through the GI Bill. Additionally, Schneider offers a formal sponsorship program, providing mentors to new hires from the military community. Other military-friendly hiring practices from Schneider include:
Guaranteed home time for weekend drill and annual training—no time off required
Tuition reimbursement available if VA Benefits are used to pay for truck driving school
Extended benefits and differential pay if deployed for up to 18 months
Military experience is converted to Schneider experience toward pay
“Being named to this prestigious list is a testament to our long-standing commitment to the military,” said Schneider military recruiter, Matthew Larson. “Our veteran associates are a great asset to Schneider, and we consider it an honor to help those who have served our country transition into a successful career.”
Employment at Schneider also provides veterans with a unique opportunity. Drivers who are veterans are eligible for the chance to drive a Ride of Pride truck. The truck, which is annually awarded to a carrier by Freightliner to recognize veterans, is a rolling military tribute with a patriotic design. Schneider has been awarded with a truck an unprecedented 10 times, and a veteran or current member of the Armed Forces is chosen to drive the truck to various events throughout the year, including Rolling Thunder and Wreaths Across America.
